About Us

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria is a non-profit organization that serves children and youth in the Victoria Capital Region.

At Big Brothers Big Sisters an adult "Big" is matched with a child or youth "Little" based on similar interests. Together they build a friendship based on respect and trust. The volunteers and young people in our programs experience the magic of everyday moments shared with a friend. Everyone needs someone to laugh with, to share a dream with, and to just hang out with. Friendships made through Big Brothers Big Sisters are the little things that mean the most.

It does not take special skills, money, or experience to be a Big Brother or Big Sister. It only takes a willingness to spend time with a child, to listen to them, and to be their friend and advocate. Time commitments vary depending on the program that best suits your needs.  Commitments start from as little as one hour per week for one school year in the In-School Mentoring Program, and they go up to three hours per week for one calendar year in our Community Programs. Many matches last longer than a year and the positive impact of mentorship lasts for a lifetime.

Our Values

…that all children have the capacity to lead full and rewarding lives, reach their full potential and become adults who contribute to their community.

… that the healthy development of a child is fostered within a caring and loving family and that healthy development can be enhanced by positive, nurturing relationships with caring adults.

… that programs and activities should be dedicated to strengthening the abilities and interpersonal skills of children in need and their families.

… that special strength of our organization is the commitment of our volunteers to building a vibrant community through their active collaboration with our professional staff in both service delivery and governance.

… that rigorous screening, matching, monitoring and training standards must always be maintained to ensure the safety of children involved in our programs.

… that volunteers, staff and the children in our programs should reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of our community.

… that we have a responsibility to provide an environment for our staff which recognizes and supports their contributions to our organization and provides opportunity for personal and professional growth.

… that we take pride in the quality of our work and strive for excellence, we keep our promises, we treat each other and those we serve in an honest, open, and fair manner and that we accept full responsibility and are accountable for our actions.

… that the delivery of human services in the community will be strengthened by alliances and collaborative initiatives with other organizations who share and demonstrate a commitment to our values
